SAN JOSE, Calif. — An 86-year-old man was rescued from his burning San Jose home early Sunday, but his dog did not survive the blaze, an official said.
Crews learned of the fire around 3 a.m. when a person reported it at fire station 16, which is not far from the burning home in the 2000 block of King Road, said San Jose fire Capt. Mike Willcox.
Firefighters arrived in two minutes and found the man in a back bedroom while searching the home. The man, who was not identified, was transported to a hospital for examination and will likely be OK, said Willcox.
During a subsequent search of the roughly 1,200 square-foot, single family home, firefighters found the deceased pet.
So far it appears the blaze started in the kitchen and was likely an accident, but the cause remains under investigation, said Willcox.
Due to the fire and heavy smoke damage, the house is not inhabitable.
