LOVE COUNTY, Okla. — A firefighter helped several crews battle a grass fire hours after his own home was destroyed in a blaze.

KXII reported that Greenville volunteer firefighter Shane Kirk’s wife, Marcie, woke up to the smell of burning plastic.

“I was asleep, woke up and thought I smelled plastic burning and I walked the house and didn’t see anything - I flipped the light on then and that’s when I could see the house was kind of smoky,” she said.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but the house was ruled as a total loss.

“I’ve been on a lot of house fires and when it’s your home, it’s just different,” Kirk said.

Kirk said he responded to a grass fire that burned nearly 1,000 acres just two hours after his home was destroyed.

“You know they’re down there and that’s my second family so I am there with them,” he said.

Twenty departments spent hours extinguishing the fire, which is believed to have been caused by a vehicle.
