MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — A Maplewood firefighter was treated and released after being injured in an apartment fire Saturday night.

The firefighter suffered second-degree burns underneath his jaw after his mask and breathing apparatus came loose, leaving part of the firefighter’s face exposed, Maplewood Fire Chief Steve Lukin said.

The firefighter was kept overnight at an area hospital for observation after suffering minor smoke inhalation, according to Assistant Fire Chief B.J. Jungmann. He was released Sunday morning.

The firefighter had been at Maplewood Gardens apartment complex in the 400 block of McKnight Road South, where a kitchen fire began in one of the units about 9 p.m. Jungmann said the last fire crew left the scene around 1 a.m.

Two of the complex’s eight units sustained fire damage and the rest sustained smoke damage, Jungmann said.

The Maplewood Fire Department had not completed an estimate of the damages as of Sunday.
