Firefighter recovering after falling through attic floor

The 25-year veteran suffered some spinal injuries, but is expected to be released from the hospital in two to three days

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A fire captain is recovering after emergency surgery was required when he fell through an attic floor while fighting a house fire Monday morning.

Concho Valley Homepage reported that the fire captain, a 25-year veteran with the San Angelo (Texas) Fire Department, was cooling hot spots in the attic when he fell one story below. He was wearing full turnout gear at the time.

He was taken to a hospital and went into emergency surgery.

“He’s doing good. This morning it didn’t look hopeful for us. It didn’t look very good at all,” Assistant Chief Scott Farris said. “He had some spinal injuries. They were able to go in and do emergency surgery on him and was able to, we hope, correct the problems. He’s moving all of his extremities and talking to us right now and he’s very thankful.”

He is expected to be released from the hospital in two to three days, according to the report.
