Firefighter rescues mother, son from burning house in first career save

The 22-year-old has been working as a volunteer live-in at the station and ‘was quick thinking on his feet’

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A 22-year-old volunteer firefighter ran the 20 yards from the station to a burning house in his bunker gear to save a mother and her son — the first saves of his young career.

Firefighter Wilcox found the mother Wednesday night on a set of stairs and helped her outside, and then went back into the home and rescued her son who was sleeping upstairs. The rescues were firefighter Wilcox’s first saves as a firefighter, who has been working as a volunteer live-in at the station, according to PennLive.

“I don’t want to do anything else,” Wilcox said.

Other firefighters arrived on scene when Wilcox was coming out of the home.

“It was quick thinking on his feet,” Progress Fire Chief John Brindle said. “It was all within a matter of less than five minutes that all this happened.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the kitchen.
