LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga. — Georgia forestry officials say at least 10 acres have burned at Sweetwater Creek State Park over the past few days.
News outlets report that fire crews have been working to extinguish brush fires at the popular hiking and fishing destination since Thursday.
Park manager David Jordan says firefighters don’t know how the fire started. It has proven difficult to battle because of hotspots that have sparked back up due to wind conditions and the ongoing drought.
Officials said it was 90 percent contained Sunday.
About 814,000 people each year visit the park, which is located about 15 miles west of downtown Atlanta in Douglas County. The park includes lakes, a creek, hiking trails and the ruins of a pre-Civil War textile mill.
