DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — More than 60 firefighters were honored for saving 100 residents from an apartment fire.

WSAV reported that Jan. 23 was proclaimed DeKalb County Fire Rescue Day by county CEO Michael Thurmond in a special meeting to recognize the firefighters for their heroic saves during a fire at the Avondale Forest Apartments, including Capt. Scott Stroup, who was caught on camera catching a child from a third-floor window.

“I’m extremely proud to honor the more than 60 firefighters that worked together on that cold Jan. 3 morning,” Thurmond said.

“This occurred at 5:30 in the morning – when most folks are asleep,” Chief Darnell Fullum said. “They woke up, they were on the trucks and they were catching babies within 5-6 minutes.”

Chief Fullum added that heroic saves like this incident are caused by strong teamwork from the department.

“There is a brotherhood, there is a sisterhood between these firefighters,” Chief Fullum said. “Capt. Stroup even said if he wasn’t there he knows someone else would have been right there and done the exact same thing that he did. And that’s what they do. It’s a team. It’s teamwork.”
