GILMORE CITY, Iowa — An Iowa fire chief has died after suffering an apparent heart attack while responding to a fire.
Gilmore City Fire Department Chief Larry Nielsen, 60, was en route to a barn fire on Tuesday evening when he fell ill, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
The firefighter driving the apparatus immediately pulled over to the side of the road and called for help.
EMS crews responded and treated Chief Nielsen at the scene before transporting him to the hospital where he later died.
