SAUGERTIES, N.Y. — A 19-year-old volunteer firefighter died Saturday night while battling a chimney fire.

Hudson Valley News Network reported that newly elected Captain Jack Rose, with the Mount Marion (N.Y.) Fire Department, went into distress while fighting a fire in the basement. Fellow firefighters initiated life-saving measures and took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Capt. Rose was remembered by his colleagues as smart, quick-witted and devoted, according to the report. He joined the department when he was 16 and colleagues said firefighting was in his blood.

Fire Chief Dave Ayers said his department is “devastated over the loss of such a young life and devoted member of the community.”

The cause of Capt. Rose’s death is under investigation.

Funeral arrangements are pending, but a GoFundMe account has been set up to help with expenses.
