SANFORD, Maine — A volunteer firefighter from Arundel is trying to figure out what to do next after fire heavily damaged his apartment over the weekend.
The fire broke out at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at 18 Church St. in Sanford. Volunteer firefighter Dean Gilliam said his girlfriend called him to tell him about the fire. Gilliam said the fire started when his mother fell asleep in bed with a cigarette.
Gilliam’s girlfriend, 4-year-old daughter and his mother were able to get out safely. Gilliam said he grabbed two fire extinguishers from his car and tried to get upstairs to fight the fire himself.
