SILVER CITY, N.M. — The Silver City Fire Department was called out to 1906 Lamina Loop on Monday morning in reference to a structure fire. Firefighters conducted a search of the singlewide mobile home and removed an unconscious adult male along with a dog.
Neighbors advised us that a father and daughter lived in the home and were believed to be there at the time, deputy chief of the Silver City Fire Department Jeff Fell said. Firefighters immediately conducted a search of the residence and found an adult male unconscious in the hallway. Firefighters immediately removed the patient and treated him.
According to Fell, the daughter wasn’t at home at the time, but a dog was given oxygen therapy, and with time regained consciousness and was given to family members.
Engine 12 was the first to arrive on the scene with four personnel, approximately three minutes after the call. Captain Gabriel Gutierrez took command of the scene.
Crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from a bedroom on the east side of the single wide mobile home, Fell said. Ladder one arrived on the scene with two personnel and then firefighters were able to make entry through the front door and make an offensive attack.
The male was transported to Gila Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition.
Fire investigators determined that the area of origin was in the bedroom on the east side of the residence, Fell said. The cause was an overloaded electrical outlet. The fire damage was significant in the east bedroom while the remainder of the residence sustained heat and smoke damage.
This is the first incident of this nature in about 10 years that Fell has been with the Silver City Fire Department. Fell credits the training and firefighters for working quickly and letting their training take over.
“Anytime we pull up to a structure fire we control the scene and do a search for possible victims,” Fell said. “To be able to do what we did today is the reason why we all became firefighters in the first place. This hasn’t happened this situation since I can remember, and I have been here for the past 10 years. And saving lives and giving people a second chance is what we live for.”
