EDON, Ohio — A volunteer fire department is still without equipment after a weekend fire destroyed engines, tankers, and all kinds of firefighter gear. Insurance adjustors continue to estimate the damage, but the Florence Township Fire Department estimated the damage at close to $1.5 million.

Florence Township Fire Chief Jay Klingler said he first learned that his station caught fire after his wife called to tell him. The call went out at 6:53 Sunday night.

“You pour your heart into making this place nice,” said Klingler, who worked as chief at the Williams County fire department for nearly 17 years. “Then to have this happen. I can’t imagine the destruction someone feels when someone loses their home either, but this feels like that. It’s got to be the same feeling. Then to come out here when the fire’s going and find you can’t even fight your own fire at your fire station.”
