Retired firefighter spots house fire, jumps into action

He called 911 and ran over to make sure the homeowner made it out; she was already outside and safe

PENN HILLS, Pa. — A retired firefighter was in the right place at the right time Thursday morning and was able to help out at the scene of a fire.

Don Santoriello told Channel 11’s Dave Bondy said he was on his way to do some volunteer work when he saw smoke coming from a home on Verona Road. His instincts kicked in and he ran over to make sure the homeowner made it out. The good news: she already had escaped.

“I went to the front door and it was already open. I yelled inside to make sure nobody else was inside. She was in the backyard already, her and her dog,” Santoriello said. The woman had just returned home from the bus stop where she was dropping off her child when she smelled smoke, then heard a popping sound on the porch.
