Va. firefighter falls 2 stories battling house fire

A mayday call was sent out to rescue the firefighter, but he self-extricated himself and is OK

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. — A firefighter escaped injury after falling from the second floor into the basement during a house fire Thursday.

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jennifer Conley Sexton said a mayday call was sent out to rescue the firefighter. The firefighter was able to climb out of the house and is OK, WDBJ7.com reported.

Water had to be trucked in to fight the flames because of a lack of fire hydrants in the neighborhood.

No one was inside the home when the fire broke out. The fire caused $120,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
