BOSTON — Firefighters battled a five-alarm fire in West Roxbury last night that caused the partial collapse of a vacant building, authorities said.
The blaze was at the former home of Armstrong Pharmaceuticals Inc, said fire officials, but the building has been vacant for several years. No injuries were reported.
“It’s been vacant for a couple years, maybe several years,” said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald. “We have it in our computer as a posted building, which means a hazardous building, so no interior attack is allowed.”
He said flames were through the roof when firefighters arrived about 7:30 p.m. He said last night the fire was still burning, and firefighters were outside pouring water on the blaze, but are unable to get to the root of the fire.
He said fire investigators will have to wait until at least today to get inside the building to begin hunting for a cause. He said a portion of the MBTA’s Needham line that runs behind the building was shut down as flames spewed from the structure.
