Firefighters pressure chief, city to keep station downtown

Firefighters have spent months fighting a plan to move a downtown fire engine, and 12 firefighters with it, to a new station across the other side of the city

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — For firefighters, hitting the streets is part of the job.

But Wednesday many of them are pounding pavement while they’re off-duty. They go door-to-door for a cause. They say public safety is at stake. “There are a lot more activities in the downtown area, more people living here and more people working here than ever before. And it’s not prudent, from our perspective, to reduce fire services any more,” said Local 157 union president and current firefighter Phil Sipe.

Sipe and local firefighters have spent recent months fighting a plan to move a downtown fire engine, and 12 firefighters along with it, to a new station on the far southwest side. “At this point in time there’s been no real progress on it,” Sipe said. Now they’re trying to get downtown residents and business owners like attorney Trey Kouri on board.
