RACINE, Wis. — Jeffrey Peterson may not have held the post of Racine fire chief for long, but he still left his mark with the department he served for 33 years – many of those in various leadership positions, former colleagues and family said Thursday.

Peterson, who served as chief in 1996 and as a battalion chief from 1990 until 1996 and again for two years after a demotion caused over a well-publicized residency dispute, died Wednesday at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital after his fourth bout with cancer, his youngest son Dan Peterson said.

After climbing the ranks of the department from a rookie private when he signed on with the department in 1965, Peterson was promoted to lieutenant and then held the post of division chief of training before being promoted to battalion chief, an officer who basically oversees operations on a particular shift.
