NEWFIELD, N.J. — Mayor Donald Sullivan kept his vow — the borough will have its municipal fire department in spite of a firefighter walkout in March.

At midnight July 1, the Newfield Fire Department went into service with a dozen new members, a new chief and lingering legal issues from previously serving fire officials. It’s also responded to four calls, including a house fire, down electrical wires and a brush fire, the new department’s chief Sean Riley reported.

“I hate to see a town lose a fire department or not have one,” said Riley. Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Company in neighboring Franklin Township provided fire protection for the borough until it went back into service this month. Forest Grove will continue providing mutual aid support.
