SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District has a new fire chief.

The Board of Directors on Saturday selected deputy chief Mark Wells for the head position, according to a department press release. The personnel shuffle came after incumbent Chief Kurt Henke announced plans to retire in October after 33 years in the fire service.

“The Board of Directors is very excited to work with Chief Wells to lead Metro Fire into the future,” Board President Randy Orzalli said in a statement.

Wells’ career began with the Citrus Heights Fire Department in 1987. He has served in various capacities including in emergency planning and the hazardous materials response team.
