GARY, Ind. — Gary’s fire department now has 15 fewer emergency medical services workers, following a recent decision to merge the fire and EMS departments.
Fire Chief Teresa Everett says like many city departments, her department must do more with less, to save money. Everett says steps to merge the departments already began before she took the job as chief, nearly a year ago.
The City Council voted on Friday to cut the 15 positions and Monday was the last day of work for those affected. The move is expected to save the city between $800,000 and $1 million.
