DC fire chief cleared in assault complaint involving firefighter

The firefighter filed a charge against Chief Ellerbe alleging his wrist was injured when the chief grabbed his phone from his hand

WASHINGTON — D.C. Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe will not face charges after a firefighter accused him of assault last month.

WJLA reported that when a D.C. ambulance erupted in flames while on a call in August, images quickly hit social media. Sources say Chief Ellerbe was so furious about the photos that he forced a firefighter to hand over his phone, according to the report.

The firefighter filed a charge against Chief Ellerbe — alleging his wrist was injured when the chief grabbed his phone from his hand, according to the report.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and determined there was not enough evidence to charge Chief Ellerbe, according to the report.

Chief Ellerbe, who has previously denied that a physical confrontation occurred, said in an email that he was not surprised by the decision and that it “confirms what I said from the beginning,” according to the Washington Post.
