BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — A suggestion that Bonita Springs firefighters carry firearms, floated over Labor Day weekend, a died a quick and painless death at a fire commissioners meeting Monday night, when the board member who came up with the idea said he didn’t much want to talk about it, much less make an actual proposal.

Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue commission member Fred Forbes suggested earlier this month that after reports of attacks on first responders, it may be time to arm the district’s firefighting force with military weapons for protection.

But during a “commissioners comments” portion of the board’s meeting Monday night, Forbes spoke on another issue and announced he had nothing else to talk about. Forbes’ silence prompted commission chair Steven Lohan to raise the issue, apparently with the intent of putting it to rest.
