NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A judge ruled that a North Providence fire station be reopened just hours after the mayor ordered it closed.
Mayor Charles Lombardi said the Geneva Fire Station is not necessary for public safety and the city needs to shutter it to save money.
But firefighters’ union President Lt. John Silva said the station is critical in maintaining quick response times to emergencies in the city, and firefighters were given no notice of the closure.
Silva said a judge ordered the station to stay open until a hearing on the union’s request for a permanent injunction. Lombardi agreed to reopen the station within 48 hours.
