WISCASSET, Maine — Voters decided to approve the continued practice of volunteer firefighters washing their personal vehicles at the station.

The Nov. 8 referendum vote passed by more than a 2-to-1 margin, reported the Lincoln County News.

The controversy of whether firefighters should be permitted to wash their personal vehicles at fire stations began in April, when a town manager told firefighters they could not do so.

Town board officials have voiced concerns of liability, stating the city could be liable for any injuries that occur while firefighters wash their cars.

Wiscasset Board of Selectmen Chair Judy Colby said regardless of the vote, the town could still be liable if injuries occur.
