BONNE TERRE, Mo. — A restructuring plan has some worried about their safety in Bonne Terre. This fire department just got a little smaller, but because of it, city bosses are convinced it will get better. In this small town, usually a smoking light fixture wouldn’t bring so much attention, but it was the first test for a fire department in transition.
Douglas Calvert, Police Chief and Firefighter, said “If anyone has any doubt that the city of Bonne Terre would be uncovered during this transitional phase, this is proof of it.”
Calvert, among those responding to this emergency, said that while he is a volunteer fire fighter, he rarely answered a call in that capacity. Calvert is among the 17 volunteer fire fighters that were asked to turn in their gear and re-apply, after city bosses felt a tighter financial belt needed to put on the fire department.
