Temporary sales tax hike pumps nearly $1M into ailing Calif. fire dept. budget

The money will bring firefighters back to work and reopen stations

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento’s police and city fire departments could be getting some much needed relief from budget cuts, thanks to sales tax money from Measure U.

The city council will be reviewing where that money could be going after the the city manager presents his recommendations Tuesday night. Measure U was approved by Sacramento city voters last November.

The temporary half-cent sales tax increase is expected to pour $5 million into the city before the end of this fiscal year. Of that money, the city manager recommends $1.5 million should go to Sacramento police.
