Veteran firefighter appointed interim Boston fire commissioner

John Hasson will serve as fire commissioner until a permanent selection has been made

BOSTON — John Hasson, a 41-year veteran Boston firefighter, has been picked to serve as interim fire commissioner.

“The Boston Fire Department will be in great hands under the leadership of John Hasson,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said in a statement. “I’m grateful for his service and his commitment to fulfilling the vision of the Boston Fire Department as we work together to improve the services we provide the City of Boston.”

Hasson has worked as the acting chief for the past six months, the Boston Globe reports. He will serve as the commissioner until a permanent selection has been made, according to the report. The search for a new commissioner will begin this week, the mayor’s office said.

Hasson joined the department in 1973 and has also served as chief of operations and division commander, according to the report. Before joining the department, Hasson served four years in the US Marine Corps, according to the report.
