YODER, Wyo. — For the first time in decades, Yoder, Wyoming, has its own fire department. During a June 13 emergency meeting, the town council and mayor took action to form a Yoder Volunteer Fire Department — for 60 days.

According to Mayor Norman Feagler, action was taken to protect the town’s 157 citizens, as well as the Southeast school and its 350 students and staff. “We’re trying to look out for the safety of the school, our residents, a lot of them elderly, and our town,” Feagler said, explaining the unprecedented action.

The move was necessitated following the June 2 dismissal of 10 firefighters from the Yoder Volunteer Fire Department by the Yoder Fire Protection District 5A board of directors. On a 2-1 vote, the board removed volunteers who lived outside the fire district’s boundaries. This in turn led to another 12 firefighters announcing they were taking a leave of absence. Only one active fireman remained on the department roster.
