Audio: Hostage firefighter calmly details gunman’s demands, weapons

Man lured firefighters to his home with an emergency call, then held four of them hostage for hours

SUWANEE, Ga. — Audio from the hostage situation in Suwanee, Ga., Wednesday reveals one of the firefighters calmly calling dispatch to explain the situation as it unfolded.

“We are in a situation where we have an armed person, and he is requesting certain utilities to be turned back on at his house, and he is armed, and we are in the room with him,” said the firefighter.

He goes on to tell dispatch that the gunman has “multiple handguns, multiple rifles,” and that he wants his “cable turned on by 5:30.”

The firefighters were held for hours, with one firefighter allowed to leave to move a fire truck. But with police later fearing the remaining firefighters were in immediate danger, SWAT teams set off a stun blast and stormed the house, and the gunman was shot dead during an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.

One SWAT team member was shot in the hand or arm but was OK afterward, and firefighters suffered only minor injuries, authorities said. The firefighters were treated and released from the hospital.
