NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — A National City firefighter was stabbed by a woman’s son while giving her first aid Friday, police said. Another woman also was stabbed in the attack.

Police officers arrested the 34-year-old son after getting the mother to safety.

Fire crews were sent to a home on Euclid Avenue, near 18th Street, about 1:30 p.m. to aid a woman reported to have fallen, police said. She was lying in the driveway with a head injury.

Firefighters were tending to her when her son attacked them with a knife, police said. One firefighter was stabbed in the upper torso. Another woman who was outside the house also was stabbed.

The son retreated into the house and the firefighters backed away, radioing for help, police said. Officers got the man’s mother away from the driveway. Then they ordered her son to come out, and he did. He was taken into custody.

The firefighter and the woman who was stabbed were taken to a trauma center. Their wounds were not considered life-threatening, police said.
