Firefighters rescue brother hurt in head-on collision

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Ricky Tallent, the volunteer firefighter injured in the crash, is undergoing surgery Thursday.

Officials said one of the two drivers involved in a head-on collision in Lincoln County was a volunteer firefighter. Crews with North Brook Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash on NC 27 in Vale around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters realized the driver of the truck was one of their own, Ricky Tallent, 35, of Vale. Tallent was traveling to the department to attend a training class when a woman who was driving an SUV crossed the center line, causing a head-on collision, North Carolina Highway Patrol investigators said.
