DENNIS, Mass. — A firefighter saved the life of an elderly woman in Dennis Monday after she spent hours in dangerously cold temperatures.
Mary Atkins is in stable condition Tuesday night recovering from life-threatening hypothermia. The 85-year-old was stuck in the ice and snow, in dangerously cold temperatures for hours Monday night, and only survived thanks to her neighbors at the fire house next door.
Atkins fell when she returned home from having dinner Monday night at about 5:30 p.m. “I knew when I was pulling in there that I had seen this lump of ice and snow, but I thought I could get around it,” she said.
