HAZLETON, Pa. — Volunteers from Fearnots Volunteer Fire Company, Foster Township, rescued a male after he crashed an all terrain vehicle in coal mining land Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Mike Spock said crews were dispatched to the area around 9 South Hazle Brook Road for the rescue after a person with the victim called Luzerne County 911 for help.

Spock said it took about nine volunteer firefighters about 45 minutes to rescue the male, using a rescue tool called a Stokes Basket and the private vehicle of a volunteer firefighter.

The male, he said, was about 40 feet below ground level in a stripping pit on private property owned by a coal company.

He drove into the bottom of the pit but his ATV rolled as he made his way out and ended up leaving him with a broken leg, Spock said.

American Patient Transport Systems Inc. and state police at Hazleton also responded.
