LA FERIA, Texas — A well-liked volunteer at the La Feria Fire Department was paralyzed from the waist down Friday night after a car wreck.

Alex Casas, 25, was driving home from Mercedes when another car stopped suddenly, said fire Lt. Robert Guerra. Casas lost control and hit a utility pole. “He’s got a broken left shoulder and he’s paralyzed from the waist down,” Guerra said.

A helicopter rushed Cases to Valley Baptist Medical Center, where he remains in intensive care. Casas had just graduated from a local fire academy. “He’s been one of the most active volunteers here,” said Assistant Chief Ron Cathy.
