ALTOONA, Wis. — Altoona Fire and Rescue has received a significant grant from a sandwich chain, and the equipment the funds purchased should make both firefighters and residents safer.

The $33,650 grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation purchased 10 breathing hose kits, four thermal imaging cameras and two rapid intervention team (RIT) system bags. The latter two are, according to a statement from the city, important items that can significantly improve safety.

Thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to spot burning areas that may be concealed within walls, alerting them to potential trouble spots that aren’t immediately visible. They can also peer through smoke to spot people trapped in low-visibility situations.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was created in 2005 and has awarded more than $77 million
