CITY HEIGHTS, Calif. — Two people were hurt in a City Heights crash involving a fire engine that was rushing to an emergency Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The engine was on its way to a fuel spill with its lights and sirens on when it crashed into a maroon car at the intersection of University Avenue and 40th Street about 10:20 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Capt. Joe Amador said.

The engine was headed west at the time. The car had just exited from Interstate 15.

The firefighters in the engine jumped out and started working to free a driver and a passenger who were trapped in the wreckage, Amador said. The two victims were taken to hospitals. Their injuries were not specified.

No firefighters were injured.

Both directions of University Avenue were closed for hours while officers investigated. The south I-15 off ramp onto University Avenue was also closed.
