Driver crashes into Fla. fire truck, dies

The 27-year-old man crossed into the path of the responding rig; no firefighters were hurt

THONOTOSASSA, Fla. — A 27-year-old man died Tuesday after driving into the path of a fire truck responding to an emergency.

FOX 13 News reported that the Hillsborough County (Fla.) Fire Rescue truck was responding to an unrelated car crash with its lights and sirens on when Johnathon Scaglione crossed into the path of the rig.

The three firefighters who were on the truck weren’t injured. The truck was heavily damaged and was towed off.

Scaglione suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said because the rig was filled with water, increasing its weight, it killed Scaglione on impact.

“It really is sad and it’s an unfortunate thing that happens out here, and it happens a little too often I think,” resident April Bryan said. “It’s fast and furious. It’s a winding road. It’s a log winding road in the woods, and people just want to go fast.”

The accident closed the highway for more than three hours. No charges have been filed yet.
