ANTIOCH, Calif. — An SUV driver was killed late Friday night when he slammed into the back of a fire truck stopped along Highway 4 at the scene of an accident, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District reported.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:57 p.m. crash on eastbound Highway 4 between Somersville and Loveridge roads near Antioch.

One firefighter received minor injuries when the fire department ladder truck he was on was struck, said Robert Marshall, a fire marshal with the fire district.

The ladder truck that was hit was positioned behind a fire engine responding to an earlier accident, he said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. The victim’s name has not been released.
