Firefighter charged with DUI after fire truck crash

The firefighter was responding to a grass fire when he veered off the road to avoid colliding with a car

LEE COUNTY, Miss. — A firefighter was arrested after being accused of driving a fire truck under the influence of alcohol and getting into a crash while responding to a fire.

WTVA.com reported 34-year-old Phillip Gasaway, a member of the Unity Fellowship (Miss.) Volunteer Department, was responding to a grass fire at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday when he lost control of the rig and veered off the road.

Gasaway said he did have alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, but that he was attempting to avoid colliding with an oncoming car, according to the report.

Police later charged him with driving under the influence.
