Police find Va. fire truck stolen from maintenance garage

It was not immediately apparent whether the truck was stolen overnight or this morning from the lot at the garage

RICHMOND, Va. — Authorities today reported the theft of a Richmond fire truck from a city maintenance garage, but the vehicle was found a short while later.

Richmond police spokesman Gene Lepley said officers were called at 9:03 a.m. to the city garage at 1650 Commerce Road in South Richmond to take a report of a stolen fire truck.

It was not immediately apparent whether the truck was stolen overnight or this morning from the lot at the garage, which was fenced and locked, Lepley said.

Roughly an hour after the truck was reported stolen, it was found a short distance away, in the same block of Commerce Road. The vehicle, undamaged, was parked behind a building near the Bruce Street intersection.

Lepley said the truck, built by Pierce Manufacturing, is a smaller-body model that is slightly larger than an ambulance. It is red and has No. 22 and the city fire department logo on its sides.

Crime-scene technicians were called and tried to see if they could find fingerprints or other evidence that might help them develop leads in the search for suspects.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by their tip. Both methods are anonymous.
