Off-duty La. firefighter dies in fire at his house

There were no working smoke detectors in the single-story house

ALEXANDRIA, La. — An off-duty Louisiana firefighter died Sunday after a fire started in his house.

KALB reported that Dustin Bordelon, 24, with the Rapides Parish Fire District #2, was found in the hallway by fellow colleagues.

Fire department personnel administered CPR on scene, but firefighter Bordelon was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the report.

The fire started in the kitchen and investigators believe firefighter Bordelon may have been cooking and walked away, KALB reports.

There were no working smoke detectors in the single-story house, according to the report.

“During this tragic time, we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, co-workers and all who knew him. This is truly a sad day for not only this community but for the entire fire service,” State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said.
