BURNAUGH, Ky. — Emergency crews were on the scene in what is being described as a major explosion Monday at the Special Metals plant in Burnaugh.

A total of seven workers were injured, five were transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center for treatment, according to Tom Adams, Boyd County Emergency Medical Services director. None of the injuries were serious and included mainly burn and respiratory irritation from inhaling smoke and dust, Adams said.

An additional 10 workers were evaluated and treated at the scene, mainly for eye irritation caused by debris, Adams said.

An employee said the blasts occured in the plant’s melt shop and was loud enough to be heard for miles around.

Numerous area fire departments were on the scene along with Boyd County Emergency Management and a Hazardous Materials Team from Marathon refinery.

The plant was formerly owned by INCO Alloy, later sold to Special Metals and is currently owned by Precision Casting Corp.
