Before raising ladders, speak an ‘all clear’

Tips

By Mark van der Feyst

When raising a ground ladder for any type of operation, it is imperative that there are no overhead hazards present. This simple rule cannot be stressed enough as there are many occurrences of ground and aerial ladders coming into contact with live power lines.

A way to check for this is to develop the habit of saying aloud, “checking for overhead obstructions.” By saying this statement, you are training yourself to do it and letting everyone else around you know that you are checking. Always look up and check.
