Russ Sanders, a regional manager with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), was honored with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Metropolitan “Metro” Fire Chiefs Association. The award recognizes Sanders for his history of accomplishments, contributions to the Metro Chiefs Association, significant contributions to fire safety, and demonstrated leadership.
Sanders is the executive secretary of NFPA’s Metro Chiefs Association. As NFPA’s regional manager for the central area, he represents NFPA in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. He also serves as the president of the United States delegation to the International Association of Fire and Rescue Services, an organization representing 52 countries. Prior to joining NFPA, he was the fire chief of the Louisville Fire Department, Louisville, Ky.
The Metro Chiefs is a section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and NFPA. Awards were presented at its 2009 annual conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, June 21-26, an event attended by approximately 80 Metro chiefs from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

(2003); Dodd Miller, Dallas, Tex. (2004); Warren McDaniels, New Orleans, La. (2005); Herman Brice, Palm Beach County, Fla. (2006); Dennis Compton, Mesa, Ariz. (2007); and Charlie Dickinson, Pittsburgh, Pa. (2008).
