‘It burned to the ground': Miss. firehouse destroyed by fire

Bentonia firefighters are salvaging what they can and relying on neighboring departments after losing their firehouse

BENTONIA, Miss. — Bentonia firefighters were called to a fire at their fire station on April 5 that left the building a total loss.

Assistant Fire Chief Gary Taylor said members are focused on salvaging what they can and finding hope in the ashes, and they are determined to rebuild stronger than before, WLBT reported.

“It burned to the ground,” Chief Scotty Smith posted on social media. “Yes, we lost our station, but we built something together tonight something special. God is greater and He will allow us to build bigger and better!”

The fire began sometime between 4 and 5 p.m. on April 5 and continued into the morning. Firefighters from neighboring departments responded to the scene.

Officials reported no one was injured during the fire and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Taylor said mutual aid agreements are in place for fires in Bentonia.
