SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah Fire Master Firefighter Michael Curry died from an aortic aneurysm suffered as he was preparing to enter the Savannah River for a water rescue Nov. 19, a Savannah newspaper reported.
Chatham County Coroner Dr. Bill Wessinger said the aneurysm struck Curry as he was getting diving gear from a fire truck, according to the Savannah Morning News.
Curry and other first responders were helping people who fell into the river when a ferry boarding ramp collapsed.
Fellow responders said Curry appeared to enter “a vacant stare,” Wessinger said. He later died at Memorial University Medical Center.
Services for Curry are 2 p.m. Saturday at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 222 East Harris St. in Savannah.
Curry’s body will be carried by fire engine along a 1/2-mile route west on Harris Street to Bull Street, north on Bull Street to Oglethorpe Avenue, and east on Oglethorpe Avenue to department headquarters at Abercorn Street, where a short program will be offered, a Savannah Fire and Emergency Services news release said.
Oglethorpe Avenue between Habersham and Whitaker streets will be closed to vehicle traffic during the funeral service, procession and program at SFES headquarters. Parking will be prohibited on East Harris Street between Abercorn Street and Bull Street and along Oglethorpe Avenue, between Habersham Street and Whitaker Street beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, the department said.
