MELROSE, Minn. — A firefighter died after falling ill at a family cabin over the weekend.

Spring Valley (Wis.) volunteer firefighter Terrance “Terry” Edward Shafer, 62, responded to a vehicle crash Feb. 24. Soon after departing, crews were advised to cancel and returned to the station.

Shafer fell ill at a family cabin in Minnesota later that evening, reported USFA. He was transported to a hospital, where he died the next day.

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Shafer joined the department in 1979 and served as fire chief since 1986, reported the Pierce County Herald.

Shafer leaves behind three children and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday.
