MONONA, Wis. — An off-duty firefighter was killed while attempting to help a woman stranded on the highway on New Year’s Eve.

WSAU reported that Chris Truman, a captain at the City of Lake Mills Fire Department, stopped to help a woman who had skidded off the road. According to note passed along to the department from the mother of the woman, Truman “saved [her] daughter’s life.”

“She got out of her car and was afraid and overwhelmed,” the statement read. Truman “saw her and pulled behind her with his lights on. He came out of his car and told her to get back in her car. He pulled the bumper that was hanging off and then went to her window and told her he would follow her off the Beltline to safety. It was at this point that the driver hit him.”

The statement continued, “My heart is in so much pain for all of you. He is my hero. Please let his wife/family know he is forever our angel. I’m just so very sorry.”

The driver of the vehicle was arrested by police, and is accused of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
