SAN ANTONIO — A member of the San Antonio Fire Department was killed in what Chief Charles Hood called a “simple accident.”

Greg Garza, a 17-year veteran of the SAFD, was part of a crew responding to a fire at a hotel. While coming off the fire truck, Garza appeared to trip or stumble into the street, before being hit by a passing car, KENS 5 reported.

“This is stunning for our organization. We are hurting right now,” Hood said in a press conference.

The driver of the vehicle stayed to render aid to Garza and appeared grief-stricken by what happened. An emergency crew transported Garza to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

“Today, our city lost a son, we lost a husband, we lost a brother,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.
