Flashing lights bars muted with black bunting, and pipers and drummers led an army of fire-fighting trucks into a church parking lot today for the funeral Mass of fallen firefighter Jeffrey Scheuerer, 35. He was a 21-year volunteer with the Readington Fire Company and a district warden with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service since 2007.

Scheuerer died on March 28 while working with a Fire Service crew on a controlled burn at Round Valley Recreation Area in Clinton Township. He was struck by a Jeep and killed after heavy smoke apparently shifted and obscured the road on which he was standing, Lebanon-Stanton Road.

Today his service was recognized by firefighters filling 110 firetrucks. Because the trucks nearly filled the parking lot at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Readington and also lined the adjacent Pulaski Road, buses shuttled others to the funeral Mass.
